During the Oct 1903 Pumpkin Freshet, Dick Shafer's house along the Delaware River on Columbia St.... washed away down the Delaware River.In December he walked twenty miles to Philipsburg, NJ, in search of his belongings....there he found his carpet and some important papers. The freshet destroyed all the wooden covered bridges along the Delaware river except at Columbia/Portland.
